«Nun, Herr, ich bitte dich,
dass du mir gibst,
die schöne Dame, farbenfroh,
die unter diesem jungen Baum lebt.»
«Nein», sagte er, «daran habe ich nie gedacht!
Das war ein übler Schlag, den du mir versetzt hast,
es ist sicherlich eine üble Sache,
sie in deiner Begleitung gehen zu sehen!»
«Herr», sagte er, «obwohl du ein reicher König bist,
wäre es doch eine noch üblere Sache,
eine Lüge aus deinem Mund zu hören.
Du hast mir gerade gesagt,
dass ich alles haben könnte, was ich wollte;
ein König muss sein Wort halten!»
Der reiche König sprach dann Worte
und sagte: «Du bist ein wahrer Mann;
deshalb gewähre ich dir, dass es so sei.
Nimm sie bei der Hand und geh;
ich hoffe, dass du ihrer Glückseligkeit würdig bist.»
Er dankte ihm hundertmal;
er nahm sie sofort bei der Hand
und verliess schnell diese Behausung.
Und um alle zufrieden zu stellen,
brachten sie die Königin
in einer grossen Prozession durch die Stadt nach Hause;
dort wurde er erneut gekrönt;
ebenso die Königin Dame Meroudys;
und sie lebten noch lange danach;
und der König war als wahrer Verwalter erfüllt.
«Now, Lord, I pray the

«Nay», he seyd, «that thought I never!
A foule coupull of you it wer,
A foule thing it wer, forthey,
To se hyr go in thi company!»
«Lord», he seyd, «though ryche kyng,
Yit it wer a fouler thing
To here a lesyng of thy mouthe.
That thou me seyst to me nowthe
That I schuld have what I wold;
Bot nedys a kyng word mot hold!»
The ryche kyng spake wordys than,
And seyd, «Thou aete a trew man;
Therfor I grante that it be so.
Thou take hyr be the hond and go;
I wyll that thou be of hyr blyth.»
He thankyd hym a hundreth sythe;
He toke hyr by the hond anon,
And fast went forth oute of that wone.
And sethin wyth grete processyon,
They brought the quen [home]
thorow the tounne;
Ther he was crouned new, iwys;
So was the quen, Dame Meroudys;
And levyd long afterwerd;
And seth was kyng the trew stewerd.
